Wedding Work: Art of the Dress
Playing Dress-Up is an art, one that often starts when we're young, trying to figure out who we are in our
minds' eye, in our dreams, in our hopes, in our fantasies. Fast forward to The Wedding Day and that dress-up
fairy tale is magnified, regardless of whatever cultural tradition we belong to, aspire toward, or even run from.
The Wedding Dress is the ultimate dress-up confection, a sweet symbol of hopes, dreams, fantasies, love and potential. So much emotion and expectation is wrapped up in The Wedding Dress, yet its visibility is so fleeting, and then quickly packed away and hidden. My Wedding Work series serves to stand as a lasting vision of the day's hopes and the future's promise, bringing the dress out of the closet (so to speak).
Each painting tells of a unique, particular love story and preserves an emotional piece of the wedding. Each confection is a unique, tangible representation of all that awaits, as I seek to capture not just a representative image of each bride's dress, but particularly, the feelings which it encompasses. In these paintings, there are hidden messages to be found within each dress -- flowers, tears, a beating heart...

![]() Flower Detail (from Janey's Dress)The bride wore a nontraditional black; her dress -- in all its simplicity -- conveys deep emotion and hope interwoven among its threads. This blooming flower stem is just one detail hidden in the inky fabric, while the imagined red lining hints at a depth of emotion. |

![]() Detail (from Ali's Dress)Iridescence in the piece reflects the sparkling bride's enthusiasm. |
![]() Gold detail (from Ali's Dress)From afar, it may look like the background's a solid bright coral/pink, but upon closer examination, the depth of colors in this painting reflect the depth of emotion represented by this dress, which was originally worn by the bride's mother. The gold represents a component of the bride herself. |
